Rapid Droplet Coalescence Produced by Thunder

چکیده

Abstract This article considers a simple model to numerically study whether thunderclaps can produce droplet coalescence in natural clouds due the relative velocities they induce between different-sized droplets. mechanism is evaluated for cloud that has both relatively small liquid content and narrow size distribution. The idealized as static environment, consisting only of water droplets air, which no changes occur except those produced by thunderclaps. All other mechanisms, such gravitational effects air turbulence, are disregarded. thunderclap models we use mimic profile an actual clap far from lightning discharge. Their acoustic power spectrum obtained analytically found peak infrasonic frequency range, agreement with some experimental results. during passage their equations motion using drag coefficients apply conditions imposed clap. possibility growth may result claps studied integration discretized equation. For case considered, results show thunder event, several consecutive claps, few seconds significant mean diameters. Such times orders magnitude shorter than required mechanisms similar effects.

Hydrodynamics of droplet coalescence.

We study droplet coalescence in a molecular system with a variable viscosity and a colloid-polymer mixture with an ultralow surface tension. When either the viscosity is large or the surface tension is small enough, we observe that the opening of the liquid bridge initially proceeds at a constant speed set by the capillary velocity. In the first system we show that inertial effects become domin...

Droplet actuation induced by coalescence: experimental evidences and phenomenological modeling

This paper considers the interaction between two droplets placed on a substrate in immediate vicinity. We show here that when the two droplets are of different fluids and especially when one of the droplet is highly volatile, a wealth of fascinating phenomena can be observed. In particular, the interaction may result in the actuation of the droplet system, i.e. its displacement over a finite le...

Fluctuations and Luck in Droplet Growth by Coalescence

How can such “enormous variations” arise from seemingly identical mean-field thermodynamic conditions? For example, why does one such stratocumulus cloud drizzle while another one does not? Part of the answer, we think, is in pronounced fluctuations (deviations from the mean), and methods of statistical physics may be helpful. In particular, the initiation of drizzle or rain is reminiscent of c...

Selective droplet coalescence using microfluidic systems.

We report a microfluidic approach, which allows selective and controlled 1 : 1, 2 : 1 or 3 : 1 droplet fusion. A surfactant-stabilized droplet with an interfacial surfactant coverage, Γ, of >98% will fuse spontaneously with a second droplet when Γ of the latter droplet is <16%. However, when Γ of the second droplet is ~66%, the two droplets will not fuse, unless they have previously been brough...
